Default Maytag Washer motor smoking and rubber smell
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: LAT8705AAE
Age: 5 - 10 years

I turned on the washer and when it gets to the draining part the water doesn't drain and there is a rubber smell. I turn off the washer and then opened it up to clean out any dirt caught inside. Then turned it back on and the washer starts running again, but then there is a smell and then i see smoke coming from the motor area. Please help! Is there something wrong with the motor? Did it get short circuited and needs replacement?

If smoke definitely coming from the moter= new motor time. Check for burnt belts.

Oh, I checked again. The burning smells starts when the washer starts draining the water. The motor runs slower and no water comes out. The motor works fine before that. I checked the two belts under the washer and they seem fine.

Pull both belts off and turn tranny pully both ways, one way is agitate, other way is spin. If spin hard to turn, you might have something jamming the spin basket
If ok, check the pump for a jam.

I tried turning the wheel in the middle where the spin basket is and it was hard to turn. How can I check for a jam? Inside of the washer, middle, or base?

Yank off agitator. There is a left hand alluminum nut holding the spin basket in. You will need to take that off, they sell a special wrench for this.
