Default Maytag washer leaking and making grinding noise
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: LAT8826AAE
Age: 5 - 10 years

Maytag washer, model LAT8826AAE is leaking and making grinding noise. I called for professional repair help just to receive over $800 repair estimate. I believe bearing, seal are bad. Seal has been replaced couple of times already.
not sure if I should try to repair by myself or just go for new one. Any word of wisdom? What is the avergage life of washer like this?

Remove belt from pump and see if it has bad bearings. Also look above tranny for leaking seal. Turn tranny pully both ways. If noisy you have a bad transmission.

I basicly have the same washer as you do and mine was doing the same thing as you described in your post.I replaced the seal and outer tub bearings in a couple of hours at a cost of about 130 bucks for parts.I believe its your bearing causing the noise your hearing and prematurely shortening the life of your tub seals. To do a quick check, remove the agitator off the splined shaft by removing the small hex headed screw near the bottom of the agitator.then remove the locking nut that holds the inner tub to the splined shaft-this is a left handed thread so when removing make sure your going in a clockwise direction,I used a small punch and hammer.Once removed.lift inner tub out and set aside. Then grab the splined shaft and see if you can move it side-to-side without moving the outer tub.If you can then your bearing is shot.If it is just drop a post and I can give you step-by-step instructions on how to change the seal and outer tub bearings.Hope this thread helps.

Dear cybsterman,

I have the same noise grind and some water leaking from my Maytag Washer (LAT8826AAE) during the spin cycles as well.

Could you send me step-by-step instructions on how to change the seal and outer tub bearings as well?

My email is:

Thank you.

Not sure what "average" lifespan is but my folks had a maytag washer that lasted over 20 years (1978-2000) and would have gone longer except that repeated basement flooding eventually caused the basket stabilizer mounts to rust out at the bottom..... Other than that the thing was a champ.
