Question Maytag washer - How to remove pulley?
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: SAV5910EWW
Age: 1 - 4 years

I am attempting this repair for a friend so I'm guessing the age of the machine to be 1-4 years but I am guessing the model number (Maytag: SAV5910EWW) will clarify the age to someone in the know.

Somehow clothing had become trapped between the base of the agitator and the drum. She carried on using the machine until she saw smoke. I removed the agitator and found the clothing to be wrapped around the shaft. I freed the clothing and replaced the agitator.

It seems the smoke was from the overloaded belt which is now nothing but a molten mess on the pulley. I would like to renew the pulley along with the belt, but it has me beaten. I have removed the screw and plastic helix drive lug allowing the pulley to slide down the shaft, however there is not enough clearance between the end of the shaft and the milkstool to allow the pulley to be removed.

Can anyone please advise me on:
1/ Should I attempt this repair or leave it to the experts.
2/ If I should attempt it then how do I remove the pulley.
3/ Any tips on belt replacement/tension.
4/ Why would clothing become trapped in the first place? My guess is too big a load, but could there be another problem area that needs to be looked at?

Thanks in advance for any advise that you can offer.

Des.

This is a new question for me. Only answer I can think of is to turn the washer upside down and let gravity move the tub sufficiently for pully removal.
Only other way is to remove the entire tub assembly.
