Here's your schematics from our pals at partselect.com
Maytag A412 Parts List

It's super easy even with no previous experience.

The job will take 5 minutes if you don't have to adjust the pump belt , 10-15 minutes if you do .

It's probably the drive belt, maytag part 2-11125 about $25 bucks.
You could also check the pump belt maytag part 2-11124 about $25 bucks.

Instructions are on the maytag part bags on how to replace them. Can you believe that, I couldn't.

Unplug the washer. slide it away from the wall and tip it back, put something (a 4x4 block of wood) under the bottom to support the washer.

The belts are under the washer.

Roll off the pump belt on bottom with your fingers then the drive belt. This is easy!

Inspect the belts for damage, check to see if the pulleys have melted rubber or anything on them that could cause the belt to slip or smoke..

If you also replace the pump belt you will also possibly need to retension the pump belt. The drive belt has no tensioning adjustment to do as far as I can see, it's on a spring mounted carrier that appears to self tension. (As long that the self tensioning springs aren't worn out, (they only cost $5 to replace for the pair of springs).

The pump belt will seem really loose when properly tensioned compared to things like car belts ; ). You pinch it in the middle and watch the motor pulley move. Adjust the tension so that it has a 1/4 inch! gap before the motor moves. Instructions are on the bag ; ).

Hopefully this is just a worn belt. And something else isn't causing the belt to wear prematurely and smoke.

In other words, hopefully the belt is the cause of your problem and not just a symptom of another problem.

I'd replace the belt first. Then worry about other things ; ).
