Maytag top loader did not spin or agitate. It pumped out water very well.
I replaced the belts and adjusted the pump postion and belt tension.
Now, the washer agitates, but does not spin.
When it does try to engage in the rinse or spin cycle a burning smell appears from the belt that drives the transmission.
What's the problem? Why is it so difficult to turn? Transmission problems? brake?

Try turning the transmission pulley in the spin direction and see if it is hard to turn and listen for a grinding sound.

You may have a bad tub bearing.
