Default Maytag Spin cycle noise
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MAV5000AWW
Age: 1 - 4 years

I probably have the same "jet engine " noise in Spin as others have mentioned. I am pretty sure the tub bearing is the culprit. A couple of questions on replacement of the bearing (s). 1. On the parts diagram I see item 9 Tub and seal kit. Does this includes the bearing? Is this kit all I need? 2. There is another bearing pictured in #12 titled "spin bearing". Is this a second bearing required on the bottom of the transmission? 3. Are there any special tools (other than normal mechanics tools) required? 4. I have removed the agitator screw and attampted to pull the agitator out, but it will not budge. I am afraid to break it. Is there a secret to removing the agitator? Thanks.

The agitator is on a splined shaft and will be tight to remove.

There are special wrench that are required but I know other have done the repair without them.

The tub seal kit (item 9) does come with the bearing.

The lower bearing is not usually damage but you can order it and return it if it is not required.

Here is a link to your washer model MAV5000AWW.

Default Maytag Spin cycle noise/ agitator removal

Thanks, I have ordered the tub seal /bearing kit. I am having trouble with the agitator removal. I took out the center bolt and tried soaking the shaft top with WD 40 for several days. After pulling/wiggling by hand to no avail I then tried to remove the agitator with a small line and a board for a lever. I can pick up the whole machine but the agitator will not come off. Any tips on how to remove it? If there is a special tool can it be rented or borrowed or is it relatively inexpensive? Where can I get one. I don't want to wake up the Maytag repair man. Thanks for any help/suggestions.

I finally removed the agitator by drilling two small holes in the top of the agitator post after removing the screw. Doused with WD 40 and next day wrapped a one inch kayak tiedown strap under the agitator and around a 2 by 3 board across the top of the washer and wound the strap tight with a screwdriver. THis is called a Spanish Windlass. The agitator popped right off. The WD 40 and windlass loosened the rust around the base of the agitator. THe rust has pitted the bottom half inch of the transmission shaft and down into the seal visible in the bottom of the tub. I chipped away big chuncks of rust, wire brushed and vacuumed it out. Removed four screws in bottom of tub. More WD 40 overnight. The Spanish Windlass still won't budge the tub. Now the Question: Even if I can get the tub out Will I have to replace the entire transmission or is there just a shaft part? I am pretty sure the old shaft is ruined and a new seal and bearing will not be the answer. I assume the old bearing was ruined when water leaked through the old seal due to the rust. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Unfortunately you will have to get the whole transmission.

Yes the bearing would have been damaged by the leaking seal.

Thanks for the information. I am going to replace the entire washer due to the total costs in the repair on an old machine.
