Default Maytag sounds like dead bearing on spin
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: SAV365ZAWW
Age: 1 - 4 years

Purchased in '04 and is used about 2 times a week. Works fine except for a horrible noise during any spin cycle. Having been an auto mechanic, i'd call it a dry bearing or maybe gear noise. Are there any idlers in this thing? or most likely trans problem? Worth fixing? Repairman wants $70 just to come listen, plus parts and fixing it. From what i've been reading, Maytags suck now days. I can fix about anything once I know were to look.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Mark

Your spin bearing is rusted out, there are millions like yours doing the same. The water seal starts leaking warm soapy water in to a un sealed bearing and washes out the grease da!da! shot bearing. I don't go out on these calls any more. Whirlpool bought maytag almost 2 years ago, and stopped making those lemons.
You can order the parts and take everything apart and replace bearing, tub seal, and while your at it,
the needle bearing for brake reliese, snubber ring is due to go,so while is's all apart it's easier to do all of these at once. Or buy a new good washer, and be money ahead.

Thanks for the reply Betty.

I did some snooping and pulled the lower front cover off and looked inside. I released the spring on the idler and the idler is ok. I noticed black dust on the floor of the cabinet and also the same black dust on TOP Of the big bearing that the trans sits in. This bearing then sits in a large bracket that supports the trans and tub. The bearing "looks" isolated from any water. It appears to be shot. Going to ck with a local shop tomorrow and see how much if I bring it to them. Really hate to dump this thing since it's not even 3 years old yet.

I know all the bearings now come from China and most are junk. Wondering if I can change just the bearing if I get ambitious! LOL I've been an auto mechanic for 16 years and love a challange. Still have all my tools and have access to pullers and bearing installers too. Tomorrow will tell.

What brand do you suggest these days? Don't need a big fancy front loader, just a decent top loader that will last more than 3 years.

Honestly this is possible to do yourself, but chances is that the bearing in the Tub seal is what is bad and making it sound like an Airplane taking off, If you decide to do this let me know and Ill try and walk you through it, But remember this is a pretty big Job even for the exp. Tech's.

I like the Fisher & Paykel brand top loaders a little expensive but are Great!!!!

No problemo, Damole. So you like fisher pakel, tell me why you like it. someone gave me one that was so bad after one year, that it would have cost more to fix it than it cost (parts only) no labor

Thanks to both of you. I stopped by a local good shop and asked how much to fix if I bring it in. Est. $160. Think I'll just go look for a new one and donate this to ??? LOL Just don't like sinking that much into a used washer.

Default sav365zaww washer leak-same problem

I need take apart instructions. I do not have a repair manual. I called maytag and they said they did not have a lot of problems with this model. Either repairman do not report the problems or they are lying?

Default same washer

If you repaired your washer, is not now functioning better. I read bettyboops reply and she may be right and we are wasting our time with this unit. my husband is mechanically inclined and we are trying to fix this ourselves. So far we are down to the agitator shaft but cannot get it out. Not sure if it unscrews or should it be pulled up? thanks for any help.
