Default Maytag Perform noise and smell
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: PAV2300AWW
Age: 5 - 10 years

So, for the last 6 - 8 weeks our machine has been making a lot of noise and the smell of burning rubber fills the air.

Running through a full cycle the machine requires one of two things or both to help it along . When the machine starts the wash cycle you need to push in the button and pull out the button in order to get the agitator to start spinning normally.

When the machine hits the rinse cycle you need to burp in (open the close the lid, our 3/4 years olds can do it ) in order for the machine to stop making an awful screeching noise and smell . After you burp it the machine begins to drain properly and is able to hit the full spin cycle. If you don't burp it , the machine will struggle thru and eventually empty the tub and hit a full spin, but not without smelling up the place.

Through out the cycle however it is just plain loud as well. Please help or is this a lost cause .

Remove the front panel and watch what is happening when it goes in to the cycles.

It sound like the belt tension is off.

Watch and see if the motor is moving to adjust the tension on the belt.

Here is a link to your washer model PAV2300AWW.
