Smile Maytag Neptune "Growling" fixed
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MAH4000AWW
Age: 5 - 10 years

I just ordered a replacement motor and control board for my Maytag Neptune washer. The machine had started making a "growling" noise when the motor was running, and the service manual indicated the problem was likely the motor control board. I ordered the motor and motor control board combo from PartSelect (very reasonably priced, genuine Maytag parts, and shipped very promptly!) and just installed it... problem gone! The machine now runs more quietly than I've ever remembered it running. Thanks, PartSelect!

Default Help!!

Fred,
My neptune is doing the same thing. I went through the repair manuel and have determined it to be the motor and motor control board. When you fixed yours did you order the conversion kit?????

Thumbs up Conversion Kit was appropriate

Yes, I did get the conversion kit. Apparently they changed the control technology for this washer, so when you replace the motor, you also have to replace the motor control board. The new motor does not have the position sensor system that the old motor had, and the new motor control board is very different than the old one was. The conversion kit comes with everything you need in one nice, convenient package. Installation instructions are also included. It took me about an hour and a half to install it.
Best of luck with your machine. If your symptoms are the same as I had, this should fix it.

By the way, after I removed the old motor control board from the machine, and I looked at it carefully, I saw a spot on the board where some components had shorted out. There was a carbon deposit on the aluminum heat sink where the parts had "fried"... so the control board was actually what had failed, not the motor itself.

Frederick any chance you could copy the installation instructions and send it to me. I was given a motor conversion kit, but it was missing the instructions. I called Maytag Customer Service, but they refused to help me. I also went to my local Maytag dealer who told me the kits did not contain installation instructions. I'd be glad to pay you for the copy. Please contact me off forum at
ffc7verizon.net. Thank you Frederick FC7968.

I have a Maytag washer model # MAH3000AWW. The washer would not spin to let out all the water out of the tub. The tub would empty, but not fully. A growling noise can be heard. It sounds like the tub is spinning but not in the high RPM's. The door would not lock as well. I have replaced the wax motor; part #12002535 and the control board; part # 12001725. The control board resistor was burned at R11. The door now locks but the problem still exist where the tub will not empty fully and no high RPM revelations can NOT be heard & the growling can still be heard.. What else could be the problem?

When I replaced my control board, the PartSelect page said I needed to replace the motor at the same time. Apparently, the motor and control board are both a new design. I suspect your motor may be the problem, since you are still getting the growling noise and not achieving maximum power (e.g. high spin speeds). It's possible that the problem with your original motor may have caused the control board failure you mentioned, as well, rather than the other way around. I hate how appliance repair sometimes involves some guesswork... I could be wrong but I strongly suspect your motor is the problem.

Smile Free Motor & Bad Control Board

Free Motor & Bad control board.
My '99 Maytag Neptune (MAH4000AWW) stopped spinning. After running the diagnostics (sheet hidden inside top control panel) I've determined the motor control board must be bad. No visible damage, but 3 phases are not outputting normally. And testing each phase coil on the motor shows normal 2-3ohms, so I think the motor is good.
From reading these forums, I know there are a lot of DIY'ers who like to repair these at the component level, and I thought it would be a crying shame to toss a good motor (I think) and a control board that has no visible damage. So, if anyone would like this board, harness & motor and you're willing to pay the shipping, let me know, I'll hang onto it for a few months an toss it if no one contacts me. My email should be accessible from this forum, it's : mjheed@aol.com. I'll check it at least once a week. -Matt

ps. I bought and installed the $214 motor conversion kit (which comes with a new Motor, harness & control board) and it's working fine now.

OK,
My gift to my wife was this Neptune 3000 8-years ago
A gift that just keeps giving....
Replaced the drum, bad bearing, replaced the front seal due to the mold, "its still a problem"
Replaced the upper control board "fried out"
Now I just replaced the lower motor control board and motor with the conversion kit.

I see that people are paying the $214+ for this new Motor & Motor control board conversion kit!
WHY?
Call maytag, ask for a local parts distributor.
Bring in your receipt of original purchase of the Neptune washer and bring in the old motor just in case they want it, my case they told me to keep it.

Now here is the good part!
Fill out the provided paperwork from that parts distributor and have them file it as WARRANTY REPAIR PART,
These Neptune have a 10 TEN-YEAR warranty on the drive motor.
In my case, that included the complete kit since I had the old motor and board.

This did NOT even involve an authorization call from Maytag, the parts shop will bill Maytag via the Neptune serial number and model number.

I will also start a new thread about this option....

Default Maytag Neptune Motor & Control Replacement

My older 3000 series (which has worked great up to now) motor control board went. Maytag current policy is any warranty part MUST be diagnosed and replaced by authorized technician. Will not authorize any DIY or anyone attempting a over the counter parts replacement.
