Default Maytag Neptune Drum Bearing Cheap Repair
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: mah5500bwq
Age: 5 - 10 years

My washer was diagnosed as needing a Drum Bearing. It had a loud growling noise in the spin cycle. I was told it wasn't worth fixing because the part was $255.00 plus the labor to install....It probably would have been over $500.00 in all.

The part was so expensive because the only way you could buy it is to get the whole inner drum with the new bearings pressed in it.

I fixed it myself for $45.00 and about four hours time, by purchasing the bearings from a local bearing distributor and pounding the old ones out and pressing (actually beating) the new ones back in.

If you are experiencing the same problem email me with a telephone number and I will call you to tell you how I did it. It works great and saved me the expense of replacing both my washer and dryer. They are in my first floor laundry room which is attatched to the garage, my informal foyer.

Please post this with the company name and phone# in the general discussion section so it can be archived properly.
I assume you also changed the seals. Also, did you clean and rustproof the spin basket supports?

Default Maytag Neptune Washer

I have a Neptune model #MAH4000AWW I see many posts for the "older" model 2000 bearing replacement, even a part number (SKF 6207 2RSJEM) I would expect that there are 2 bearings used to support the load also expect that the one closest to the seal fails first. Can anyone give me a lead on the bearings I need for this model and a set of instructions to replace them. I would expect that the seals should also be changed, could you provide the correct part number as well.

Feel free to contact me via email at Kweiswurm@itm-texas.com

Thanks in advance for your help

Hey I read your post about the Maytag Neptune. I also have a Maytag Neptune Mod.# MAH3000AWW. It is making a loud grinding noise when it is spinning a load of clothes. Sounds really bad! My washer is over 9 years old and I want to try your repair. Your washer had a different mod. #, I would like the info on how you repaired yours please. How hard was it to get into the washer and repair? Did you need any special tools? Do I need to move the washer out to the garage to work on it?
