Check around the transmission to see if to see if there is a oil leak (i.e. bad seal) A bad seal would indicate bad bearings.

Where is the transmission, and assuming that it is a bad seal, how do I fix it?

The transmission is the black (usually) device under the tub. If the seal were bad it would be covered with oil. I'm sorry, I don't have any experience with repairing them. When mine went bad I ended up getting a new machine.

I have a maytag mod mah3000awa, which if about 7 years old and has acquired a loud whine on the spin cycle. I beleive it is a bearing gone bad, but I cant find anything in the parts catalog web page that indicates a bearing incorporated in this washer. Could you please give me some guidence as to what part I should order., Bill billda@embarqmail.com

I took mine apart last night to see whether there was anything obviously wrong, such as an oil spill or something like that. I could find nothing, but the grinding sound continues. I have looked on line and cannot find anything listing problems relating to a grinding sound in the spin cycle. Any ideas what the grinding sound on the spin cycle could be???

When going into the spin cycle the pump will first pump out the water. Try to determine if is something in the pump. Also, try turning the tub by hand to see if you can re-create the noise that way.
