Default Maytag Agitator and Spin cycle noise
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: LAT9634AEE
Age: 5 - 10 years

We have a LAT9634AAE Maytag clothes washer that is making a sound during the spin cycle like it is out of balance. It also make a type of clunking sound now during the agitator cycle. Makes me think there is a bearing going out or something. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your transmission is bad. Remove belt from tranny and turn the pully one way then another. If you feel and hear a clunking sound you have a bad transmission.
You can also remove agitator, look for retaining screw in lower part of agitator loosten and pull out agitator. You will find a left hand nut holding the tub in place.
Remove nut and pull out spin basket. Then check splined tranny shaft for lateral play
If so you have a bad transmission.

appguy;
Thanks for the response. I will take it apart and try what you instructed. Are the transmission's rebuildable? Or do they cost close to what a new machine would be?
