Default Maytag Agitates During Spin Cycle
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MAV408DAWW
Age: 1 - 4 years

Hi - my Maytag Legacy Series washer is just over 1 year old. It was working fine right up until the 1 year warranty was up. 2 weeks after my warrant expired, this problem started. The problem is that when the washer goes into spin cycle, the drum doesn't spin. Instead, the washer agitates just like in the regular wash cycle. There's no loud noise, no knocking, no grinding sound. It just agitates instead of spinning the drum.

My understanding is that the motor is supposed to reverse and spin in the opposite direction during spin cycle. I checked mine and the motor runs in the same direction (meaning it only runs in one direction, whether in spin cycle or not). The pump is working, and all the water pumps out fine. I guess it's normal for the water to come into the tub during spin cycle? This also seemed odd to me at first, but I thought maybe it was to rinse extra suds from the clothes while the drum was spinning.

Is this maybe an electrical issue? Like the panel isn't sending the right message to the motor? Or maybe a solenoid or something? I'm totally lost here - any help would sure be a big help.

Thanks

also when i was checking the belt under the washer, i can spin it by hand in either direction with no resistance. the belt looks and feels new, but seems pretty loose to me (compared to the belts on my car, anyway), could this be related?

If you select spin, does the washer agitate and pump the water out at the same time?? Some things don't add up here, pump can only pump out when the motor turns in spin direction!!

yes, when you set the selector knob to spin cycle, it agitates and the water pumps out. it (the drum) just doesn't spin. would this be a transmission problem?

Make some written notes here. Turn the tranny pully, and note what happens in each direction. Then turn washer to spin. Does the tranny pully turn in the same direction for spin by hand??
