Default Maytag A512 boot seal
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: A512
Age: More than 10 years

The mounting stem and boot seal is leaking. I removed the agitator and the top outer drum cover. Looking down on the splined shaft, I removed the snap ring on the inside of a sleeve or nut. Under this is a nut with indents on the circumference. I suppose this is designed fore a spanner wrench (which I do not have). I am stumped at this point and do not want to go any farther until I know for sure if that is a threaded nut and if it has left hand threads and the piece on the top that had the snap ring. Does this unsrew also? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...Ron

The nut is threaded and it is a left hand thread.

There is a special spanner but you can remove it without it.

The hub is not threaded but it does have a set screw in the side of it holding it in place.

Here is a link to your washer model A512.

Here is the tub seal and hub.
