Default Magic Chef/Maytag washer question??

I have a Magic Chef washer, model CAV 2000 AWW

It's about 7 years old and used about average for a single person.

It has slowly developed this noise, (whine), at the start of the spin cycle. It spins freely and the noise stops once the spin has commenced. If you hold the tub and prevent it from spinning at the start, it continues to make this noise till you release it and the spin actually begins. Once spinning no noise! There is no leaking, binding, or other noise. I have eliminated the water pump as a problem. I seriously don't think it's bearings. as it spins smooth, fast and even by hand.

Belt has been replaced.

If you push the tub all the way to the right, the noise is diminished, but still present.

Ideas? Bad pully, clutch/brake, thrust bearing?

Thanks so much!!

Todd

It is very hard to determine your problem with out hearing it. It could be any of the problems you have mentioned.

I'm guessing it would not be a spin bearing if the noise is present when the tub is NOT spinning and dissapears when the tub spins?

The only thing spinning is the bottom pulley when I hold the tub, or when it just starts to spin loaded.

So in otherwords, when the tub is full of laundry and starts to spin the resistance is the same as me holding the tun with my hand when it's empty .

I hear so much about these Maytag washers and their bearings, but this doesn't seem to be that.............yet anyway.

Thanks MUCH

Todd

Bump...

What slips that allows the bottom pulley to spin faster than the tub? I think the noise is in the "clutch" maybe?

With your washer empty, tip it back and look in the center of the pulley.

Remove the cup that is in the center of it.

There is a white plastic piece cam that may be broken.

This is part of number 4 on the exploded view of the transmission.

Here is a link for your washer model CAV2000AWW.
