Unhappy Loud Rapid Banging Noise in Spin Cycle
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: sav4655eww
Age: 1 - 4 years

Hello all, new to forum so here it goes, I have noticed that the helix drive nut and the pulley slip when the spin cycle occurs creating this extremely loud banging noise. I am electro-mechanical tech trainer so I jumped in. I pulled the washer apart and I tried to put extra washers between the pulley and brake assy...it seemed to help but failed again. Has anyone seen this and if so would it be a logical guess that the pulley and drive nut need replacement? Thanks sooo much in advance for any help

This loud banging noise, does it happen in the spin cycle? That is a Amana style Maytag, confused yet! LOL. My other question is, have you looked at the washer spin with the front panel off, to see if the spring housing on the pully, is not going back and forth, because the belt is streched out. You can reach me at my web site at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

I know the history..maytag buys Amana, then sells out to Whirlpool, anyway as I have mentioned in my first post...I have had this apart...agitation works fine but when it goes into spin the helix drive nut stays stationary as the pulley rides on top of it causing this machine gun sound. Just to clear this up the belt has already been replaced...it is a very unigue design and if I may add , a poor one at that. If you look at the parts pic you may be able to figure the design...a helix drive nut has to interlock w/the pulley in both the agitate and the spin, it only angages in agitate...we have purchased another unit unfortunately but it would be nice to figure this one out
