Default Loud LOUD noise with Amana Washer
Brand: Amana
Model Number: LWA05AW
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hi.

My Amana LWA05AW washer starting making a VERY loud noise. If I start the washer normally, it agitates fine. I keep turning the knob until it starts to drain water. When the water starts draining, it makes an incredibly loud noise...kind of like a knocking, and very fast. The water drains fine, but it does not spin.

What could the problem be? Can an ok DIY'er fix it?

Thanks,
Tom

On further investigation, I noticed there is some kind of bolt/shaft of some kind extending to the bottom of the machine. It doesn't touch the bottom, but is a couple inches from it and is probably the lowest thing. It is some kind of white part that spins. Above it is a black part that also spins. Obviously these 2 parts have some kind of relationship that seems to have gone sour. It appears to be something that is supposed to catch what is spinning, but it isn't catching. I don't know if this makes sense, I hope it does.

Here is what is spinning, and the thing above it is not:
SUB 40047402 (Plastic Helix Drive Lug)

Thanks,
Tom

On further investigation, I noticed that the noise only happens when it is supposed to spin. At the bottom of the tub, there is a part called the 'Plastic Helix Drive Lug'. Above it is a part that looks like it is supposed to catch on the lug, but it just keeps spinning over it fast. The engine is running, it is these two parts not catching that is causing the noise. The piece above it (the black one) spins really fast while the white one spins really slow. It looks like the white one is only spinning slowly because the black one above it is spinning fast enough to at least make the white piece move a little.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Tom
