I have a Kenmore washer #110.24052300. Last night it started to sound different durung the spin cycle. I then noticed that it smelled hot. I proceeded to find that the motor is warm. I re-ran a cycle and it filled and agitated fine with no sound or hot smell. Again as it entered into a spin cycle it started to smell. The tub is spinning in the spin cycle, be it slower than usual. Water is draining out as well. Looked for clogs in drain line can't find any (unless looking in wrong spot). Have Multimeter , but not sure how to test motor or capacitor. Wondering pump or motor or ???. Thanks for any help.
Take off cabinet and look at the wash tub, it's clear plastic, you could have a sock stuck between the spin basket and the wash tub, will make a drag on the clutch and smell.
Thanks for your idea. I took out the inner tube - no sock. Took out all of the drain hoses - no clog. I test the motor and capacitor with my meter and it all check out ok, yet the motor get really hot when it runs for a whole cycle. Am I missing something before I call a tech.
I don't have an answer for you, but the motor runs one direction for washing, then the other direction for spinning. the windings could have a short in them on spin and it could make the motor real hot, nothing concrete, just an opinion
Sounds like something is binding up the machine during spin even though you did not find an obstruction in the tub. Given that you said the motor checks out could the problem be in the transmission area? Is the motor the only part getting hot, or can you detect the heat from any other area such as the brake, or the pump rotor? These are just some ideas.
