Question Kenmore bangs at end of spin cycle
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 110.24632300
Age: 1 - 4 years

I have a kenmore washer that has been acting odd.
I was washing a smallish load last night, and suddenly heard a very loud bang. I went into the utility room and the washer had jumped kitty corner in the room!
I opened it up, but the load was not unbalanced, so I waited around for the next spin.

It makes a strange rattling noise as it starts to spin, and it used to go away after it got up to speed but is now staying. Also, at the end of the last spin, it made the loud banging noise when it stopped, but the load was not unbalanced.
I tried another small load tonight, and it made aneven worse noise when it stopped, sort of a grinding bang this time. It has not jumped again though.

Anyone have any ideas?

Yes a simple, fast cure to your bang problem! pull the washer a foot or more from thewall, and tip the washer till it rests firmley aginst the wall, now look at the bottom center of the tub, you'll see a chrome spin clutch, above that, a painted
spin brake, now you'll see a pair of brake shoes just like on a car. what is happening is the brake shoes are braking too harshley. you need a Q-tip, and some common vaseline, or common auto greese. put a dab of the lubracant on the inside of the painted brake drum, between the space where there is no lining,
so when the brakes spin a little greese will will coat the drum and the brakes will operate smoothly. use a dab of lube about the size of a large pea. now a word of warning, do not get any greese on or in the shiney chrome drum, or your clothes will not spin, if any questions let me know. I do this every time I service a" real maytag" or whirlpool.

I have never tried this, but for minor brake problems, the pro's say to spray some silicone spray on the brake shoes. Adding grease to the brake shoes is really not a long term fix. Also, if in the future the grease gums up, the motor bearings might fail due to this problem. I have allready seen this happen.
For this serious of a problem, it is best to just replace the brake shoes or grind the old ones down a bit. The cause of this problem is either rusted brake housing or wearout of the brake shoe cam rollers.
I measure the motor current draw before and after and usually get a reduction of at least one amp. To facilitate brake shoe replacement, I drop the spin tube down a few inches to allow prying down the brake shoes till they clear the housing.
