Default Kenmore Autodry 1 washer/dryer - washer won't start
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 110.98575820
Age: 5 - 10 years

The dryer portion of my Kenmore stacked washer/dryer wasn't working so I ordered a new motor. While waiting for the motor to arrive, I left the front panel down and ran the washing machine portion. This caused the water level switch to not operate properly so the washing machine continued to cycle a number of times. I reattached the front panel and this stopped that problem. I later noticed a burning smell (this smell lasted for some time - even after the machine was unplugged for quite some time) and the washing machine wouldn’t operate at all. I waited a while and it ran fine for a short time but then stopped working altogether. I replaced the control timer thinking that was the problem but it wasn’t. It appears I damaged something operating the washing machine with the front panel down. Nonetheless, do you have any advice with regard to what the problem may be, how to diagnose it, and how to repair it? I thought it might be the lid switch (it may well be) but I was previously able to fill the tub with the lid open but now it won’t operate at all. I know there is power to the machine as the dryer portion operates properly.

Any advice would help.

Right - I fixed the dryer by replacing the motor and now the washer won't run. It is a dual unit.

To clarify a little more. The problem I am trying to resolve is that the washer won't operate at all. I gave all the detail as I thought it might give some insight into what I damaged when I was waiting to fix the dryer portion.

I did some more checking and there is water to the solenoid. Although one screen was dirty, the other was fine. I also checked the solenoid with an ohm meter and got a reading of 1 so that appears to be fine. I replaced the contol timer (which was bent when I received it making it difficult to plug the electrical wiring in) but that didn't do any good. I bypassed the lid switch with a wire and the tub started to fill so I unplugged it. I thought I had found the problem but when I tried the same thing again to verify I got nothing. Seems like an electrical wiring problem to me but I know it is not the power supply or the power cord as it is a dual washer dryer and there is power to the dryer through the same cord. Could all this be caused by the water temperature switch?

I'm not exactly sure what was wrong but the washer is working fine now after messing around with some of the wires.
