Question Kenmore 70 won't agitate & has burning smell
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 11072670110
Age: More than 10 years

The Agitation on my KENMORE 70 has quit working. (It is a Model 110.72670110 made by Whirlpool.) The Timer appears to be functioning properly. Clue #1 is that once the tub is filled, the Agitator moves back and forth a tiny, tiny, little bit (but stops when touched slightly). Clue #2 is that once the tub fill level is reached (and while tiny agitation is occurring) the water immediately begins to pump out. Clue # 3 is that after a minute or so of water being pumped out, a strong odor of a burning coil becomes very obvious. (Smells like a Relay or Transformer burning up.)
NOTE: During the part of any cycle while agitation should be occurring, the tub fills then partial empties and refills again continuously.

Also, when I looked under the machine I spotted (what appeared to be) a relay towards the back. Although I’m not sure, I thought it was attached in some way to a silver flat looking piece with a S shaped slot in it. Thinking that maybe something was snaged, as an experiment I tried pushing around that area, and got the “flat looking sloted” piece to slide (easily) to a new position. After I did this the events of the cycle became messed up. (Until I let the timer run through & then the order of things returned to normal, except for no Agitation still.)

P.S. I have remove the agitator. This model has no “dogs” at the top.

What you seen under the washer is one of the control bars that is controlled by a magnet assembly.

The control bars shift the transmission from wash to spin.

With the washer not shifting in to agitation the lever on the pump will still be in the drain mode so when the washer fills and the motor starts up the water will drain.

To get a better view of the operation take the back panel off.

The control bars are activated by the controlled magnets also known as the wig wag assembly.

The one that is closest to the motor is for the spin and the other is for the agitation.

It could be the magnet is faulty or the wire is broken.

You may even see the wire is broken.

The reason the agitator is just moving a tiny bit is because the transmission is in neutral.

Here is a link to the parts of your washer model 11072670110.

Here is the control magnet or wigwag.
