Default How to tighten replacemnt belt?
Brand: Amana
Model Number: LWD70AL
Age: 5 - 10 years

Amana top loading washing machine, LWD70AL (looks like from 1998 per cryptic code on motor) - but looks newer that 1998 - came with house I bought 2 years ago.

Problem: New belt I installed is way too lose and there appears to be no way to adjust.

Story:
Clothes got jammed over the top edge. After removing front cover, belt was broken.
I bought replacement belt (28.75") by taking old belt to store (so same length)
Old belt: Goodyear 38174
New belt: 2200063

To replace belt, this is what I did:
1. Removed front panel and disconnected wire-harness from motor and solenoid
2. I removed four 1/2" bolts holding motor/pump to frame.
3. Angled and slid motor/pump assembly out front
4. Turned assembly upside down and removed 3 screws holding white plastic pump to motor, since have to get belt around pully.
5. Wrapped new belt around motor pully and reattached pump with 3 screws.
6. Moved assembly back in place and slid other end of belt around large tub pully
7. Reinstalled motor/pump assembly with the 4 bolts

Note: Above are steps necessary to replace belt, but since I did not initially know what I was doing, I actually removed all of the metal sides and the top washer controls - but I did replace everything and everthing works (except belt is too loose). Tested by operating and yes everything works but pully slips on belt since belt is so loose. (Turns out that even with extremely low tension, washer will operate only with small water load and NO clothes).

Anyway current situation is that the belt is very loose (can even slip off main tub pully with hands).
Is there any way to adjust tension?
Could initial "jam" have bent something (does not seem likely)?
I remeasured old and new belt and yes both are 28.75".

Thanks.

You have a motor a pulley and an idler pulley the belt should go around. idler is what keeps the proper tension on the belt. Check this diagram and part number 5 through 13. Maytag LWD70AL Parts List

Default solved - belt was routed wrong side of idler pulley

Excellent post. From the picture in the link I can clearly see that I routed the belt "around" the idler pulley instead of to one side so that no belt part touches the right side of the pulley. Thanks. This completely solved my problem very quickly.
