How to replace brake shoes in Whirlpool direct drive washers I have developed a good way to replace brake shoes as this is a rapidly increasing need!! Note: You may want a supply of used brake shoes that the pad has been ground down half way for those older washers that have rusty brake housings,I also soak them in light oil.
First I remove agitator, loosen tub nut, then pull transmission out. Then with a screwdriver I pry spin tube down enough for the brake shoes to clear the housing.
This makes it much easier to pull all the parts out including the spring.
I put everything back with the new shoes, the spring next, then pry the shoe rollers onto the metal cam. I then push everything back in place, replace tranny, and tighten the tub bolt on top making sure the tabs on the spin tube line up with the drive block.
I allways test motor current before and after. Usually spin current draw will go down an amp after shoe replacement. This allways impresses my customers as they are more confident their coupler will hold up longer.
