Default Getting to the transmission
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: A503
Age: More than 10 years

Trying to get to the transmission on my A503 Maytag washer (1983).
1. I have the inner tub removed. How do I remove the tub stem, seal and hub assembly? It doesn't look as though it screws out. Set screws? There's also a spring clip on the top, around the post that the agitator sits on. Remove at this time?
2, Three big springs on the brackets that go from the base to the bottom of the outer tub. Leave in place when removing the bolts at the top? ...or remove the springs before the bolts? What's the procedure for removing the springs?

To remove the stem seal and hub remove the set screw.

Here is the hub and seal.

You can see the set screw in this image.

Remove the bolts on the braces you can leave the springs on.

You will have to remove the drive pulley and break.

To remove the pulley remove the screw and washer from the bottom of the drive shaft.

Remove the splined drive lug from the drive shaft.

Turn the pulley counter clock wise to remove it from the helical shaft.

To remove the break assembly remove the damper bolt and retaining clip.

Turn the break package counter clock wise to remove.

Thank you, Sheila, for the pic and info.
I had already found the set-screw and had been banging away at the hub for a week, trying to loosen it. Didn't budge at all. Figured it was time to abandon a 24-year-old machine and gave it---for parts---to our local repairman.
Thanks for trying. Eli Nadel, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Dear Sheila:
I changed my mind. I saw a mention on your site that the tub stem etc had revers screw threading. With that, I easily removed the tubs.
Problem diagnosis was easy: frozen bearings in the agitator tube (which explains why it would still spin/drain, but wouldn't agitate.
Confused about ordering parts: 1. Very few pictures in the parts listing, all show item numbers and PS part numbers, but the diagrams show only Maytag part numbers. How do I identify parts I need from the Maytag diagram, and then find the same thing in the parts-ordering list?
2. I do need a new 2-813 gear case cover. You list an "assembly" does this include the 2-10632 gasket I also need? Does is exclude the 2-5811 counterweight I DON'T need? Does it include a 2-11130 sleeve bearing?
3. What's the PS part number for the 14839 agitator shaft I need? Does ordering this part also include the bushings and o-rings-etc that go on it? If No, what PS part numbers do I need to know?
Thanks for your help.

If you right down the part numbers that you need and put them in where you entered your model number to bring up the picture it will give you the ps numbers.

The gear case cover part number 2-813 for the transmission is no longer available.

The shaft is special order which means that it may end up being no longer available.

It looks like the only way to get these parts is by get the whole transmission.

The part number for your transmission is PS63898. Maytag number 22002128.
