washer fills then sits there for a while quiet, then when timer reaches next cycle it will drain rinse spin etc. just does nothing when it should agitate - any ideas?

No smell, no noise just sits there.

Any help appreciated, it is my elderly fathers washer and he cannot afford a new one but my husband is handy at fixing things if he knew what to fix, he thought the timer switch but I thought we might check.
