Default GE Washer thumping during wash cycle
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: WCSR2080B4WW
Age: 1 - 4 years

My GE washer has been make a thumping sound (bump, bump, bump) during the wash cycle. Everything still functions properly. I have checked the load and its not off balance. It now does it on every load - small, large, hot, cold. No noise on spin cycle.

Any idea what the problem could be?

The noise could be coming from the transmission.

Is the sound coming from down by the base, in the middle, or inside the tub?

If I had to say, I would guess the middle. It seems to be a general "all over" noise - hard to pinpoint.

Is there a way to test if its the transmission?

The only thing you can do is to remove the front panel and see if you see anything or can pin point the sound.

The front panel is held on with clips at the top.

Here is a link to your washer model WCSR2080B4WW.

I finally took the front cover off....

It looks like the tub cover (part 329 in the following diagram) is slipping on the balancing ring. The balancing ring had little plastic tabs on it, and the tub cover is held on by clicking onto these tabs. Well, i see on the front that one of the tabs on the balancing ring is broken off - so I am thinking this is causing some play with the tub cover when in the wash cycle - when it agitates there are big black rubber bands on all four corners. So I am thinking the tension caused by these is enough to cause the tub cover to shift back and forth. And the knocking sound is the tub cover hitting the little plastic tabs on the balancing ring.

Is there any easy fix for this as opposed to replacing the balancing ring?

And how would I go about replacing the balancing ring?

I think I found the problem - it looks like some tabs have broken off of the balancing ring at the top of the tub, which is causing the tub cover to shift back and forth while agitating causing the knocking sound.

How do I replace the balancing ring?
