Default GE Washer rattling in spin mode
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: WBSE3120B1WW
Age: 5 - 10 years

I have a GE washer (WBSE3120B1WW) about 5 years old. It started to smell like a burning belt in spin mode and no spinning. I pulled front cover and slid the motor back to tighten the belt up. It now spins but has a loud rattling that almost sounds like coming from the tub. I went to Appliance Parts From PartSelect | Repair Parts For Major Appliances and now have the pictorial breakdowns on the washer machine. Does anyone have any ideas ?? I don't see any water leaks and the transmission spins easy. Help

Have you run the washer will the front panel off?

It may be the clutch assembly on the motor shaft that is making the noise.

There is a clip that hold the pulley on the motor and if it is remove it should be replace.

Yes, it looks like the clutch is the problem. It works fine in aggitation mode but in spin the clutch doesn't grab and heats up and I get burning belt smell. I also noticed a leak at where the transmission shaft goes into the tub. Is this tough to fix ??

You will have to replace the tub seal which mean you will have to disassemble the washer.

Not fun but can be done if you want to take the time.

Yes I can take the time, I like doing these kind of things. Is there a step by step procedure available for changing the tub seal ( Seams getting the aggitator out will be tough) ?? Also, for changing the clutch, do you just remove the clip under clutch and it drops right off motor shaft ?? Thanks for you help in all this.

I don't have the step by step instruction but your library or a book store should have some information on washer repair.

The agitator is snapped on to a drive bell and if you put a rope or belt under it and pull up it will pop off.

Yes if you remove the clip on the clutch it will come off the motor pulley.
