Default GE spins for a few seconds then stops
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: WJSR2070B2WW
Age: 5 - 10 years

About 6 months ago the washer worked fine but several times would not stop spinning. After a couple of weeks that "corrected" itself. Now it does everything fine up to the spin cycle. Then it drains, spins for about 5-6 seconds, then stops spinning, and during the whole drain and spin cycle it sounds like the drain pump never shuts off. However, if I take the clothes out it spins fine. If I put the clothes back in it spins for a few seconds, then stops spinning. The same thing happens on both settings, white and casual. I explained the problem to the man at the parts store and he said it sounds like the timer. I switched the timer out and the same thing happens.

Remove the front panel so you can see what is happening during the spin cycle.

Watch and see if the motor is still running.

It sound like it may be a problem with the transmission.

Here is a link to your washer model WJSR2070B2WW.

I took the front panel off last week and the motor is definitely running. I found out yesterday that it will spin normally with a very small load, but with more than 5 or 6 wet items in it it runs for 5-6 seconds then brakes to a stop. I think it is either a clutch or transmission problem, but that's just a guess.

If the transmission pulley is still turning when the tub stops spinning you will have to replace the transmission.

Thanks Sheila, but when the tub stops spinning the transmission pulley and belt are stopping too. If I take most of the wet clothes out and the washer starts spinning with a very small load, while it's spinning I can add the other clothes and it works fine and completes the spin cycle. Any other ideas? I appreciate the help/

Then you have a problem with the clutch on the motor.

It can be replace a separate part from the motor.

The clutch is number 608 on the breakdown.

Here is the clutch.

I finally got the clutch changed and that was the problem. Once I knew it wasn't the timer I figured it was the transmission or clutch (there was really nothing else it could be), and I really appreciate your explaining to me how to rule out the transmission. Thanks again, and have a great wekend.
