Default Burning Spin
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: WJSR2070B2WW
Age: 1 - 4 years

Washer works fine, all cycles, without any laundry. Once you add a load it works on all cycles except the spin cycle. A burning smell is also noted when it does not spin.

Motor works fine
Belt looks new

I suspect it is the clutch. My question is do you agree? If so how do I remove it from the washer drum? Can't seem to get it to slide out.

Thanks!
Keenan

The only clutch in this washer is on the bottom of the motor.

There is a break on the transmission that is activated at the end of the spin cycle.

Where is the burning smell coming from?

Here is a link to your washer model WJSR2070B2WW.

Thanks for the reply!

I'm sorry for the brain typo, replace "clutch" with "transmission" in my original post.

I also noticed the break "pad" (where part 320 and 403 mate) is very worn and cracked. My best guess is the burning smell is coming from the brake. I did not see any wear on the belt indicating it is sliping/burning.

Replace the brake pad?

Replace the brake pad and transmission?

Keenan

With this washer the break is engaged at the end of the spin.

With the front off watch to see what is happening.

Thanks Sheila!

When I removed the cover I observed normal operation until the spin cycle clicked in. When the machine reached the spin cycle the motor started in the reverse direction like it should. The motor spun, but the clutch did not. I am assuming that the transmission is causing too much load for the clutch in the opposite direction. I have a hard time turning the transmission by hand in the spin direction.

I have no clue what I am talking about but think the spin brake is stuck on or the mechanics in the transmission that release the brake no longer work. Or simply the transmission is shot.

Still no clue where the burning smell came from as I shut the machine down as soon as the spin fails. I do not want to risk further damge just to find the source.

What should I buy?

New transmission? New machine?

If a new machine what do you recomend for heavy long term use?

It sound like the break is not releasing all the way.

Just under the break there is a big spring.

Check the spring and make sure that it is not bent out of shape in any way.

If the spring is twisted or one of the coils is distorted it has to be replaced.

The part number for the spring if needed is PS271550.

The new GE transmissions have a brake internal to tranny. Bad brake=new tranny time. You also could have something in the tub jamming the spin basket. Pull cover off tub and check.
Just checked web site: They used to sell tranny parts like bearings but had so much trouble with this repair going sour, they no longer sell these parts.
Also, you could have bad spin tube bearings, Tell tail leaking tub seal above tranny would confirm this.
