Default Burning Rubber Smell
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: SAV-4 HD
Age: 1 - 4 years

Very confussed here, so hopefully one or more of you can clear it up.

About 2 weeks ago the washer began making noise when in the agitation cycle. Before I could get repaired a burning rubber smell was also added a week later. I replaced the belt over the following weekend. After removal of the old belt I cleaned up a large amount of rubber residue from everything as it was all over the inside. After cleaning and replacement of the belt the unusual noise coming from the machine is gone but the burning rubber smell is still very strong. I do not have any smoke coming from the machine.

Could you please advise me on where to go from here?

Check and make sure that all the pulley are turning freely and the belt is not burning again.

The burning rubber smell will linger for a while but should dissipate after a week or so.

I made sure when I replaced the belt that all the pulleys are turning freely.

It has been almost a week since replacement and the burning rubber smell is still there. Other than the smell is there anyway to make sure that I am not burning up the new belt?

With the pulleys moving freely, could anything else be wrong?

If your pulleys are moving freely there is nothing else that will cause the belt to burn.

Question What could it be?

Is it possible I am not smelling rubber; I'm smelling a burning up motor?

Again I have a new belt on there and everything is moving freely. The machine cycyles completely though loads with no problems in any cycle except for the burning smell.

And what started all this was a noise during the agitation cycle which left after replacing the belt.

Who knows??? I know I can't figure it out...

If it was the motor that was burning it would be an electrical smell no a rubber smell and it would not take long for the motor to burn out.
