It is a major job to replace the bearings.

Is this sound in the wash cycle or in the spin cycle?

I have a Maytag washer 4 years old and I just replaced the bearing and seal on mine that is located on the upper part of the transmission. The washer was making a load noise only during the spin cycle. Yes it is somewhat of a big job, but not too difficult if you like the satisfaction of saving yourself a lot of money .
My advise would be to take your time and mark everything that you remove so you'll be able to put it back together properly. Mark the location of the transmission before you remove it and all other parts that are attached to each other. Some parts will only go back together exactly as removed. Don't ask me how I know this .
My repair quote was $285.00 and I mananged to do the job for $50.00 including shipping from partselect.com. Good luck and if you like doing some of your own repairs, like I do. Go for it. Ed
