Default Banging noise during spinning
Brand: White-Westinghouse
Model Number: GHW9100LW1
Age: 1 - 4 years

Whirlpool front loader. I selected the incorrect brand and dont know how to change it. IT is a whirlpool. We recently started getting a banging noise during the spin cycle. Small loads its hardly noticeable, however with a normal or large size load it looks like the tub is coming out of the machine. This is something new we never had to reposition contents in the past. I have checked for loose hardware and the machine is level. Both counterbalance weights are in place and the shocks do not show any visable damage, I removed one shock It had very little resistence but I dont know how much I should feel. The tub nut at the rear pulley is tight. I'm lost Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Ron

Look for weak shocks or a busted support spring, if ok probably one or two spin basket support struts inside tub. If latter, you have a big job to do. Eventually they will punch a hole in the tub.

The shocks all feel about the same, but none of them actually feel like a shock to me. Not much resistence. Is there a way to check them. Also is there a way to check for the broken support struts without pulling it apart.
I took the shocks off cleaned them turned the felt liner around and reinstalled them. We gonna try it again. There is nothing to the shocks cant see how they came up with that name and want 20.00 bucks a piece for them. However I would pay it in a minute if I was sure that was the problem.

Well we did a full size comforter and no banging.... It shook around quite a bit during the spin but no banging.
I have one more question, Is there a drain filter on this model and should it be serviced from time to time. I know we all leave crap in our pockets.

Well here it is Monday morning and its banging again!!

App- guy Had a service rep out yesterday and the thing is still banging, I'm just 80.00 poorer $#@% he believed it was the bearing however there is no excessive noise when spinning. He couldn't even provide a estimate...Please tell me about the support struts I dont see any. Are they replaceable items? or part of the tub.

Default Try the pulley

I have the same problem (actually the second time I've had this). The first time, the tech fixed it. He said the nut had come loose and the pulley (pot metal) was rattling and had been banged out of shape.

This time, I checked the nut and it was tight. If you take the nut off and check the pulley, you'll note that it isn't on a taper. Tightening the nut won't lock the pulley to the drum shaft. The tightness, is provided by the shaft having two flat sides machined into it and the pulley has a matching shape sort of like a closed box wrench.

I'm going to order a new pulley and nut (nylok) and hope that fixes it. Good luck with yours.
