Red face Agitator spins freely with my hand
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 100.23032100
Age: 5 - 10 years

My washing machine quit agitating today. It moves freely when I move it with my hand both during a cycle and when not running. I have the parts guide and am trying to figure out if I should have sears come look at it for a diagnosis or just jump in to fix on my own (really have my husband fix )). Since it is clearly out of warranty I am more apt to do it yourself stuff, but this will be the first attempt to fix a washer for us...I am nervous about rate of difficulty, special tools to get agitator out, cost of parts to replace, time I will be without a washer...please help! Thanks!

You need to replace the agitator dogs. Here is how you do it. Take off the top of the agitator. Then what you need to do is take off the plastic piece under the agitator cap.You need a 1/2 extention, that you would put on a ratchet. You put the extention on your ratchet with no socket on the end, and it will fit right in the grove, and then losen it up. Pull it out, and you will see the assembly that holds the agitator dogs in place. This is so easy. Normally, I don't carry a half inch extention. I use my needle nose plyers, and grab on the plastic piece, and losen it up that way. If you need me you can reach me at my web site at ApplianceEducator.com Tom PS The part # is 80040

Thanks so much! Your instructions were awesome!
The needle nose pliers, about 30 minutes and $4.20 from a wholesale parts store and we are back in business!!
My husband was highly impressed with how easy this was! Thanks so much!!!!!
