Default Agitator Removal
Brand: Hotpoint
Age: More than 10 years

I have a Hotpoint washer (purchased 7 years ago used) that has a bath robe belt and a sock or 2 wrapped around it's base under the agitator. How do I remove the agitator (from the top or bottom)? Please help me - the thing is eating my brand new socks.

I'm no expert here but, if you remove the dial control panel you might just find a schematic, on the back of the schematic you might just find disassembly instructions. Hope this helps

To all of you that have to pull the agitator, it is not easy, you have to pull your fool head off to get it off. You crab the base on both ends and pull hard, grab in in different place on the base and pull, keep rotating where you pull. If all fails, try getting two belts, and put it on each side of the base, and get some one to help you and pull. Also get a hammer and hit the agitaor top, not hard, just to see of you can loosen up 10 years of soap build up. If you need me you can reach me at my web site at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

Default Please help Tom

Below you talk about how hard it is to get the agitator off but my problem is that it pops off during the wash cycle. I have an old Hotpoint top loader (Model number LH894LW118) It was purchased used. What do I need to replace? Is it the agitator coupling or the plastic agitator itself. I'm not sure which has worn teeth. Thanks for any help.

The model # you gave is not coming up. This must be a european model. Let me ask you this. If you were to pull the agitator off, and look down, is there a plastic piece with a screw holding it down in the center? If so that piece is what you need to replace. It is worn. That is the hub. Tom

I am in fact located in Canada. When I take the agitator off I have a shaft but no screws. At the top of the shaft I see the coupling which has the rubber "teeth" that is why I was wondering if that needs replacing. While I certainly appreciate your efforts I hope this picture may help.

It is likely the agitator that you will have to replace, the coupler is suppose to be up in side the agitator.

Before you replace these parts check the washer for oil leaks.

The lower seal in the transmission is known to go.

The agitator will likely run about $100.00 or more.

You washer is around a 1990 model so it is going on 18 years old.

Check in your yellow pages for a Hotpoint parts supplier.
