Default Agitator problems
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: LSC8244EQ0
Age: More than 10 years

I am having agitator problems with the whirlpool washing machine. It will agitate and spin sometimes. There is something locking up the machine to the point the motor is smoking. I replaced the motor to transmission coupler but this did not fix it. There were alot of rubber shreddings from the coupler. This would leave me to believe that the motor is still good or it would not have tore up the coupler. I tore the transmission apart but found nothing broken and no shavings in the oil. The transmission spins freely. Could it be the clutch or could it be the transmission when it gets on a bind. I do not see anything on the clutch as far as shavings. Is it also possible that I reassembled something wrong. I did notice that sometimes in the spin cycle(with no clothes or water) that it stops instantly causing the whole machine to jerk. Thank you for any replies.

Hi,

Sounds like some kind of transmission problem. You can check out a video at ApplianceJunk.com that shows one of the members rebuilding a transmission.

Thank you for the fast reply, I will look at the video. Is it also possible that the brake is locking or not releasing?

Forgot to mention that when it has trouble spinning or agitating I can hear a clicking sound almost like a relay switch.

Got a chance to take another look at the washer. It seems that it may be the motor. I can barely spin it with my hands(no water pump or transmission attached). When I can get it to spin, there are no rough spots or anything that grabs. Is there something I can do to fix this and if not where is the cheapest place to purchase one.

Found the problem. I believe that when the coupler went bad, the motor shredded the remaining parts of the coupler. Rubber was everywhere underneath. The little parts of rubber got into the motor and when the motor heated up, the rubber melted. This is what caused the motor to cease up. I sprayed some electric all purpose spray into the motor and let it sit. I then worked the motor with a screw driver and it seemed to loosen it up. I put it back in the washer and it worked. The motor made noises on the spin cycle but then finally quit. Are the bearings in the motor sealed or do I need to spray some grease on it? Some all purpose sprays (WD-40) eat grease. I used an electric all purpose spray(State-Dri).
