Default Agitator - how do I remove?
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: wwa5600
Age: More than 10 years

I have a piece of clothing stuck under the agitator. The top of the agitator apparently doesn't come off and I can't seem to lift the agitator up and off. Any ideas? Thanks much.

those ge's are hard to get the agitator off. You just have to pull hard to get it off. If it won't come off that way, then get a belt, and put it under the agitator, and pull it as hard as you can. Why do you think you need to pull off the agitator? Tom

Default Thanks.

Thanks - I tried to pull it off by hand and also with a belt to no avail. Once again, I have a pair of slacks caught under the agitator which I can not retrieve. I'll keep trying to pull it off because I think it is my only way to get the slacks out (yes, I have tried many times to get them loose).

Here is a parts link
wwa5600 Parts List

It shows your agitator has a cap try to get this off. If it is tight and air cannot get in you may have a suction problem. Also it will let you pour very hot water into the agitator and maybe loosen some of the crud

Read my earlier post. The 2 by 4 acts like a lever so if the rope is in the middle 1 pound of upward force on the end is 2 pounds on the rope. Longer the 2x4 the more mechanical advantage

When you put it back together put a very very light coat of white lithium grease on the splines so it will come off easier next time. Also make sure it is all the way down panty hose may be able to get under it but slacks shouldn't

I want to thank everyone for their help. I did another load of laundry and afterwards I was able to free the pair of slacks that were stuck. I was not able to remove the agiator - either by removing the cap (It doesn't llok like it comes off but I tried anyways) or popping off the agitator. I got lucky this time. Again, thanks for your help!
