The top agitator on my washer spins freely at all times. The bottom agitator works fine. I took the agitator cap and seal off and can see the directional cogs and they don't seem worn. The washer was making a really loud noise the past week and now the noise is gone. How do I find out if it's the gear box or something else?

If the bottom half of the agitator is working there is nothing wrong with the gear case.

The problem would be in the agitator.
