Default Agitates, won't spin, open & close lid, then spins
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 110.28882790
Age: 5 - 10 years

Washer agitates fine, goes to spin cycle but just makes a slight hum. Drains fines. If I open the lid, the drum jerks and then I close the lid, it will start spinning. But it won't spin again on the next cycle unless I do the same thing.
Replaced clutch assembly and no change.

Check the screws holding the lid switch in place. Make sure they are tight.

Check the strike that activates the switch.

Check that the bracket that holds the switch is not broken.

Here is a link to the parts of your washer model 110.28882790.

I disconnected and bypassed the switch altogether and just used the knob. It will agitate, go to the spin cycle but just hum and not spin. If I shut it off and turn it back on, it will spin.

It sound like you have a bad set of contact in the timer.

Remove the timer and check the contact by removing the cover of the timer.

Do not remove any of the screw in the timer.

There should be an access plate that can be remove by bending metal tabs.

Saw some arching in the timer and some burn marks, so I replaced the timer.
Still no change.
I took off the pump and motor and can spin the basket by hand, so I don't think it is the brakes.
Any additional thoughts?

There must be a loose connection in the wiring.

Pull the motor out and run in spin. If motor now runs, you have a bad clutch. Usually if the clutch is slipping the housing will heat up. Either that or something cought in the tub.
