Default WOODCHUCK (or anyone)/ any ideas?
Brand: Amana
Model Number: BX21TW
Age: 5 - 10 years

This was earlier reported as a unit that ran continually and got so cold the air box into the refer had to be almost taped shut to keep things from freezing in refer compartment. Freezer control was at 1. I have inatalled a new thermostat control.

NOW, it still runs continually, the defrost cycle works properly (only time the compressor shuts down), the freezer is set full-blast to 7 and maintains about 15 deg (except during defrost cycle when it warms considerably- refer at 40 degrees) At 15 deg freezer apparently does not care to produce ice.

I was told the thermostat merely runs or shuts off the compressor to maintain a temperature setting and does not otherwise control temperatures. True?

...With my limited knowledge it would appear it needs to have coolant (freon?) added to it OR the compressor is working erratically (possibly in process of dieing).

Any ideas why it has had such a mood swing and what might be ailing it? OR IS ITS CONDITION TREMINAL

Yes it true about the thermostat.
The sign of low freon is an irregular frost pattern on the evaporator coils.(before defrost).

Will the thermostat cut the compressor off if you turn it off or set it to a warmer setting.

woodchuck:
No, decreasing the freezer control will not shut it down unless it is turned to to 'off'.

BTW, is the evaporator accessed thru the inside? And, how is the icemaker removed to get the panel out if so?

Thanks again.

I would suspect the temp control if it won't turn it off on the warmest selection with the temps you have.

I can't tell for sure but the cover for the evaporator shouldn't involve the ice maker.BX21TW Parts List If it does need to come out, two screws should be holding it against the bracket. Just loosen them and it should lift off. Unplug the wire.

thanks again (this was a new temp control; put the old one back for kicks and it works identically)...
