Question White-ish Clear Particles In Water Dispenser
Brand: Frigidaire
Model Number: FRS26LH5DS0
Age: 1 - 4 years

Hi All,

First-timer here. I have white to clear (translucent) thin, small particles in our water dispensed from our refrigerator. These particles do not show up if using the kitchen tap or any of the bathroom taps. Thus, I suspect the particles are coming from the refrige itself.

I've replaced the filter inside the fridge with a new one, and the flakes still appeared. I then replaced the clear plastic tubing that make up the water tank reservoir, but still the flakes appeared. I then replaced the PVC water line from the wall to the fridge but still see the flakes. I've even installed an in-line 50,000 gallon filter etween the wall and the fridge, but still see the flakes. Therefore, I can only conclude now that the flakes are coming from the water line that leaves the Frigidaire water filter inside the fridge and dispense the water at the door. But with my limited knowledge of the inner workings of a fridge, I have no idea how to replace that line. I don't even see that line anywhere in the fridge.

Thanks ahead of time for your help.

Casey

Default Funny....me too!

Different make refrigerator, same problem.

Kenmore model 59507993, about 7-8 years old. Have searched internet and most seem to complain about plastic "chunks" from the icemaker due to the plastic auger. My problem is also large, thin white or clear shavings of plastic, up to about half a dime in size, in the water line.

Just like you, I've also checked other potential sources....the rest of the taps in the house are fine, and the line to the fridge is copper, so the problem must be coming from inside the fridge.

In the past (1-2 years ago) I changed the water line due to the original being cracked and leaking. The replacement I used could be a source of the pieces. I've also changed the filter in the base of the unit recently (Sears now sells Brita filters - or at least they've packaged them as Brita now), and this is the only other thing that's changed recently.

Thanks in advance for any ideas/help anyone can provide!
Brian

Not a definitive answer but one answer is that the chemicals used in water treatment facilities are causing the material the water reservoirs are made from to break down and particles appearing as white flakes in the dispensed water. In that case, replacing the reservoir is usually necessary.

Most manufacturers originally used a molded plastic water reservoir which is what seems to be breaking down. Many fridge manufacturers are now selling a coil of plastic tubing (like used in the rest of the water system) in place of the molded plastic reservoir. You can see some of the replacement kits at the following link:

Hi and thanks for the reply.

The reservoir in the fridge is the coil type and I replaced it with a new one. Still, the flakes appear after the new coil reservoir was installed. I also installed a heavy duty in-line filter right after the line comes from the wall but before connecting to the frige. -Still see the flakes.

So I can only assume that the flakes are sloughing off from the line that leads away from the filter inside the frige to the tip of the frige door dispenser.

How do i get to that line?
