Advice please: compressor sounds okay but only runs 5 seconds Brand: Whirlpool Model Number: G6SHEXML00 Age: 1 - 4 years I need assistance in determining whether I have a compressor problem. Below is more details on my problem. Basically, the compressor will run for approx. 5 seconds (sounds perfectly normal for those 5 seconds), then it shuts off. If left alone, it will cycle on again for 5 seconds after a few minutes, then back off again. I suspect the relay/overload module (which I understand is solid-state). Does this sound correct to those who know these systems? Background:
We had a power surge a couple nights ago (lights blinked off, then back on a few seconds very bright before return to normal voltage). An hour or so later, I heard the compressor turn on, then back off after a few seconds - no cooling in fridge or freezer since then. The compressor seems to turn on every few minutes, but shuts off after only a few seconds (4-6 seconds). I work with electrical systems and do my own repairs usually, so I pulled out the schematic which also tells about the cooling system service diagnostics mode.
The diagnostic mode uses the freezer and fridge controls to test the following:
Step 1: RC thermistor - result was "pass"
Step 2: Defrost heater/Bi-metal
Step 3: Evaporator fan motor - motor ran while step 3 selected
Step 4: Compressor and condensor fan motor - compressor sounds came on (sounded normal) for approx. 5 seconds, then shut off
The fridge compressor is under warranty (5 yr parts/labor); however, I would like to determine which part is failed before calling out a tech. If it is not the compressor and just needs a relay, then I can repair it. What do you think I should check first? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Daniel
