Default Whirlpool light
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: gd5rhaxntoo
Age: 1 - 4 years

Have a newer Whirlpool side by side and the frig side light was very dim so we changed same problem.Unscrewed light and then display went back on frig side screw in light it burns dim and display goes out.Checked door switch ok voltage to light ok shorts or bare wires at harness ends ok.Does the control board behind the upper left side of fridge side control the light??? Has anyone else experience this??? If I could get a hold of a schematic I could figure it out without changing expensive parts THANKS.

Here is a link to you fridge
Whirlpool GD5RHAXNT00 Parts List

For your info oo at the end of the Model Number is actually zero zero

I believe the control board is Item 18 under Unit Parts, but have not worked on this unit so it is a guess.

You have an Adaptive Defrost so the door switches are monitored by the control PCB

Sorry do not understand the above
Was the light dim and the display off when the problem started OR did the display only go off when you replaced the bulb.

I looked up the parts breakdown and it shows you have multiple lights in the freezer and the fridge. I assume all the other bulbs are OK.

Strange VERY VERY Strange

My first guess would be a bad light receptacle

Perhaps someone else has seen this

Yes that is how the unit programs the defrost frequency.
It monitors the door switch, then decides on how often it should perform a defrost.
Supposedly saves energy, for sure is a problem area.

have you tried unplugging the fridge for 10 minutes, maybe that will reset the system. Also check your manual.

I am having the same issue with mine. Have you made any headway with this problem? I have changed the control board, door switch and all bulbs and nothing. Thanks.
