Question Water tastes bad but ice tastes fine
Brand: Admiral
Model Number: hmg621841

This is a rent house so I don't know the age or history of the fridge (Admiral HMG621841). Problem: The water tastes fine going into the fridge, the ice tastes fine, and the chilled water tastes awful. I see a big coil of plastic tubing behind the drawers in the refrigerator section. I am wondering if there is a holding tank for chilling the water that may have been in disuse and gotten smelly at some time. If so, maybe I can run some water with a touch of Chlorox through there to remove the odor from the plastic (I am remembering a trip to Spain long, long ago, where we added drops of Chlorox to gallons of water before we could safely drink it.)

If there is a tank, where would it be? Or am I barking up the wrong tree here? It would be SO NICE to enjoy chilled water from the fridge during the hot Texas summers.

Thanks for any suggestions or enlightenment!

I can't seem to locate your model number on our database.

Did the model number come from the tag with the serial number on it?

The coil of plastic tubing is the water tank.

Is there a filter in the fridge?

It would be either in the fridge section or in the kick plate.

Default Model # from big paper on back; no filter found

Hi, we got the model number from a big, yellowed sheet of paper glued to the back of the fridge. I took everything out of the fridge and found no filter; can't see anything behind the kick plate either, and I was down there at eye level vacuuming yesterday. If there were a filter needing replacement, wouldn't it be before the line splits for the ice maker tube and the water dispenser tube? I can see that split right after the water comes in from outside the fridge. My guess is it's so old it never had a filter. I know I could put a universal filter in, but the mystery is that the ice is fine. The plastic tubing looks clear and clean, too.

I should have mentioned that when the landlord first installed this thing, we had bits of black plastic in the ice for a while that gradually cleared up. I just kept tossing out ice until it was clean for a few days, then started using the ice. Nobody here can remember whether there were ever any plastic bits in the water dispenser, because it tasted so bad nobody used it. I did try taking many glasses of water out of the dispenser and throwing it away, hoping the taste would disappear.

We have the kind of landlord who breaks everything he fixes --

Thanks for your help.

I will need the model number to determine if you have a water filter.

The number that you gave is likely the number for the yellow paper.

The model number tag is either in the fridge section or behind the kick plate.

The ice and water dispenser is marked "Refreshment Center"

The coil in the fridge section will likely have to be replaced.

For some reason I can't get the model to enter in to the system.
