You could replace the water tank in the refrigerator section, and start fresh. If you need me you can reach me at my web site at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

Is that a hard thing to replace? Ours is actually a coil of clear tubing.

No it is real easy, about a ten minute job, and it comes with instructions. Tom

How often do you replace the filter? You could try flushing the system with a mild ammonia solution a couple of times and then give it a good flushing with clean water. Trouble with that is the plastic may have absorbed what ever and flushing will not get rid of it. Kit may be easier way to go but then remember to replace filter more often. PL

Does anyone know how to remove this coil so I can try to clean it?

When you but the kit it will come with 2 connectors, so when you cut the water tube, and you install the new one, you will use the connector. If you need me you can reach me at my website at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

Is it possible to remove the old one and just try to clean it? If so, how?

To remove the water coil you have to remove the interior cover of the door. Screws usually behind seal/weather stripping, real PITA. PL
