Default Water leaking from side by side freezer
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MSD2957AE
Age: 5 - 10 years

I am having water leaking onto my floor from somewhere on the freezer side of my Maytag refrigerator / freezer. There is a sheet of ice on the bottom of the freezer side that comes back even after we have cleaned it.

I had a repairman come out and he wanted $350.00 to fix it. He said it needed a new Defrost Thermostat. Does this sound correct? I did not want to spend that much money on a 10 year old refrigerator and have since ordered the part, and will plan on trying to replace it myself this weekend.

Any advice on where to find/locate and how to replace the defrost thermostat would be appreciated.

When the freezer defrost the water drip down and goes through a drain tube.
Your drain tube must be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little air pressure will usually clear it out. Flush it out with hot water and clorox may help. Make sure it drains quick enough. The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the freezer.

The ice forms each time the freezer defrost it's self so I don't think the defrost thermostat is the problem. It's located on the evaporator coils probably at the top. It's clamped on.

I am having the same problem with my maytag. the coils are dripping and water pools then ices about 3 - 4 days.
I've emailed maytag to see if this is a warranty issue or not.
