Talking Water Dispenser Gone Bonkers!
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MSD2554ARW
Age: 5 - 10 years

Several nights ago, I awoke to the sound of running water. The source was our chilled water dispenser. Our kitchen was flooded, as well as the basement garage. None of the control buttons made a difference. We turned of the water supply. We unplugged/replugged the refrigerator which seemed to stop the problem. However, we pushed the "Ice" button on the face panel. This changed the lighted choice from "Water" to "Cubes". Now none of the buttons work. Nothing dispenses, not even ice cubes, which is lit. Also, yesterday the dispenser suddenly began throwing out icecubes. Obviously, we've a problem; any ideas what it might be? (We'll laugh about this once the problem is solved)

From what you are saying I would suspect the control board in the door.

When you turned the water back on did the fridge work OK?

If the display changed by its self this would indicate the control board also.

just to let you know I had a similiar problem with a maytag and I tried to replace the low voltage circuit board behind the dispenser display panel and it ended up not being that. There is another circuit board in the back of the fridge called the high votlage circuit board. Its easy to change but costs about $140 which is twice the cost of the low voltage one.

FYI--

Same thing happened to us. I came home to find the water auto-dispensing, and, when I pushed the ice cube button, ice cubes started shooting out. I opened the freezer door, which stopped the dispenser. After we cleaned up the mess, none of the buttons would work and the light was on. So, I unscrewed the bulb and decided to worry about it later. After about a month, I tried the buttons, and they worked! All was well for about 2 weeks, when we awoke to the smell of smoke. The control board was on fire! We pulled it out and am ordering a new one, but are not sure it was the root of the problem.
