Can you please verify your model number?

It is found on the inside of the fridge on a tag with the serial number.

Look closely at the plastic control panel in the fridge and locate a plastic button. Remove it and insert a flat blade screwdriver in and turn clockwise till the compressor turns off. If you can't find it look around under front kick panel or in the back for a plastic box.
Once you get it in defrost, check for defrost action. If none you have a bad defrost heater or thermostat. You will need a meter to check them.
Please post results.

Supposed to be there, it may have been removed and fell back there, just remove panel and look.

Ok we found it & turned it - the motor went off but with the fridge already not cold its already defrosting. so how do you test them to see what the problem is? what kind of meter?

I use a digital multimeter. Your defrost timer is probably bad, just replace it.
