Default Top freezer warm, fridge fine
Brand: Amana
Model Number: TX20JL
Age: More than 10 years

Hi people. Freezer is too warm (5 deg F) but fridge was ok. Cleaned coils underneath. No ice visible. Fan underneath runs. Lots of cold air blows in freezer and some blows in fridge while running. Turned up freezer control to make cooler but then fridge got too cold so turned that control down. Now with fridge all the way turned down it still is about 30 and freezer is almost ok (2 deg F). It is in a basement but ambient is 68 deg F and it has always been in basement. Can someone suggest might be causing the problem?

Thanks.

Here is a link to your fridge model TX20J.
Your damper between the freezer and fridge is motorized
This is where I would start
Perhaps the spring has been knocked off
Definitely sounds like you are getting roo much cold air into the fridge so the damper is not doing it's job

Hey thanks for the fast reply. I should mention although I can use a screwdriver and pliers I know nothing about appliances. I took the cover off of the thing inside of the fridge on the back. On the left is the fridge temp control and behind if I see the damper. As I rotate the knob a little pushrod goes up and down and the damper above it opens and closes.

With the knob all the way counter-clockwise (fridge as warm as it gets) the damper is slightly open. I'd guess it was less than 1/16" to 1/8" but I could feel cold air coming through. You're saying there's a spring somewhere that should be pulling it closed? I can't see one. I guess I could test this by seeing if it closes when I lightly push on it (tonight when i get home)?

Is the damper easy to remove in case I get the urge? I don't see any screws.

Thanks.

Does it help that I found this site shows my fridge as model TX20J (leaving off the last L)? The picture is too blurry though so I'll probably have to try a different site to see what I need.

And the spring is in place. The damper doesn't seem to cost to much. Any chance you could give me a hint how to replace it?
