Default Top freezer cold, fridge 70degrees and icemaker quit making ice
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 106.70182001
Age: 5 - 10 years

I've had this fridge for almost a month, came with place I bought. When I first moved in water was leaking thru the vents from the freezer into the fridge. I took the bottom panel off the freezer and turned it off to thaw out all the ice. I poured hot water down the drain, thinking it wasn't draining. Presto, it worked fine until last week when the fridge was hot and freezer was cold. I've been on your website and it's been very helpful, but I'm still not sure exactly what to replace to correct the problem. It seems my model has a bi-metal defrost clip and a defrost heater in the unit and there is a defrost timer and a defrost clip located in the liner.

I took the back panel off the freezer last night, the coils weren't frozen except for a small piece of ice in left corner on top of a piece of styrofoam. I dumped the little bit of ice out b/c it had thawed during this and this a.m. the icemaker had made no ice overnight. I need some guidance on what part/parts may need replacing. Thanks for your assistance and your website is huge!! I wish I had consulted it earlier b/c I paid $60 for a repairman to tell me that it was my drain and he didn't think anything else was needed. If he had blown my drain line w/ compressed air it would've cost me $245!! Thanks again for a very helpful site, Jay

Is the freezer cooling now?

Does the compressor run?

If the compressor is not running locate the timer in the control panel in the fridge section and turn the knob until the compressor starts up.

If the compressor is running and the freezer is not cooling you may have a system leak.

Here is a link to a list of parts for your fridge model 106.70182001.

Thanks for getting back. Yes the compressor runs and the freezer temp is around 10-20 degrees. The icemaker hasn't made any ice yet, but there is water in the tray.

I'm just not clear on which combo of thermostat/timers/heater items to replace to get the fridge part to cool again. Should I focus on the pair in the fridge or the pair in the unit? I checked the ventilation, it's not blocked. Thx.

Is the fan in the freezer running?

The temperature in the freezer should be about 5 degrees for the ice maker to work right.

To check the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat locate the timer in the fridge control panel.

With the compressor running turn the timer knob until the compressor shuts off.

The fridge will now be in the defrost cycle.

Look in the freezer and see if the heater is working.

If it is the heater and thermostat are fine.

The timer is causing your problem.

If the heater does not heat you will need a meter to check them out.

You can only check the thermostat if it is cold.

Help again!! I thought the fan in the freezer was running, so I replaced the timer b/c when I shut the compressor off I could hear moisture sizziling in the freezer and assumed the heater & thermostat were good.

I replaced the timer and the fan in the freezer came on and I thought all was good. I saw it running so the motor must be good working order.

Bottom of freezer is still 70+ degrees, 2 days later and top is -5 to 0 and the ice maker is only making about 8-16 cubes every 24hrs. Not sure, but could it be a thermostat somewhere? I checked vent from freezer to fridge, it's open. Thanks for the help.

Was it the fan in the freezer or the fan down by the compressor that you heard?

If the fan in the freezer is running and there is no ice on the evaporator you should be able to feel the cold air being blown down to the fridge section.

Thanks for getting back. When I first plugged in new timer, the fan in the freezer came on b/c I saw it. I haven't seen it run since then when I check the freezer temp. I don't feel any cold air being blown down into the fridge section.

I'm new to this, but the fan in freezer should run often b/c it has to help push the air to the fridge, correct? Still perplexed on Ice maker too.

Check the air flow damper in the fridge section.

It may have broken.

It is the control knob on the right in the fridge section.
