Default Thermostat timer problem??
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: GD5RHAXNB00
Age: 1 - 4 years

The freezer frosted up at the coils as is typical when the defrost does not come on. Naturally this restricted the air flow to the fridge side also. I tested the heater (good), and tested the thermostat. It seemed to have failed, but could simply had not been cold enough to test properly. I replaced it before figuring that out, so it is good now. The freezer still frosts up. The last thing I know of is a defrost timer. I think mine is a circuit board style. A PartsSelect sales rep told me it was part number PS557945. Based on my model number, is this correct, and does it sound as if it would be my problem? How complicated is it to replace? I have a health Harry Homeowner aptitude for fixing stuff, but don't want to make matters worse by experimenting. I have had the control unit off (upper right corner in fridge side), so getting that far is simple.

In the meanwhile, I was bad, and loosened the coil cover to relieve the fan of it's stresses, and to get some cold air to the fridge side. I think this might also risk the frost hardening on the coils if not addresses soon.

Can you help me understand if buying this part is my best solution, having checked the only two other components?

Thanks

Is the model number you gave PartSelect the same as what you have given me?

Default Sheila

Sheila,

Yes it is the same model number. I got it from the decal in the fridge. I cannot say whether PartSelect used the entire number or if they only need part of it to get their part number. I do know that the control unit in the upper left side of fridge compartment has a couple small circuit boards inside and some other components. How else can I help you help me?

Thanks for being there.
Mike

Here is a link to your fridge model GD5RHAXNB00.

I did not locate the part number that you gave ps557945.

There are three boards on your fridge but not that one.

Sheila,

Then what do I do now? Is there a separate defrost timer elsewhere, or is it one of those three boards?? Am i barking up the wrong tree??

Thanks again.

Mike

The part that you might need is located in the fresh food section of the fridge and it is called an electronic control.

Is part number ps869761. Number 6 in the control section.

Go to the link I provided in my last post.
